【Title/論題】A spatial theory of reading newspapers
【Abstract/要旨】
We apply some recent development in the empirical spatial theory of voting to the reader’s choice with respect to newspapers. We assumes that ideological proximity to a specific newspaper affects the choice made by a consumer to read that newspaper. Newspapers will then compete among themselves to maximize their respective readership by finding an optimal placement in the ideological space. By doing this, we can estimate the ideological slant that would be chosen if newspapers maximized their readership in an interdependent environment wherein their payoffs are affected by also what other newspapers will do, and compare these positions with newspapers’ actual choices. We then empirically apply our model to the Italian case. We show that Italian newspapers appear largely to behave as theoretically expected, with minor exceptions. We also illustrate how the “ideological force” behind such conclusion must be sought in the competition among newspapers with respect to those subset of readers that can be identified as assiduous ones (i.e., their core readers), while the role played by infrequent/sporadic newspaper readers is much less relevant in this respect.
