Education Overview

The advancement of information and communication technologies has made it possible to handle a wide variety of data, which has led to the growing importance of data science in both society and every field of academia, spanning the sciences, engineering, and the humanities. Against this backdrop, the Center for Data Science provides a wide range of educational programs, including curriculum development, to all students.

Curriculum

About Data Science

The Center for Data Science, in cooperation with the Global Education Center (GEC), offers a Data Science Educational Program for all undergraduate and graduate students. All students of Waseda University, regardless of their school/department and year of study, can learn about data science starting from the basics.

Curriculum Overview

In order to understand data science, it is necessary to acquire a wide range of knowledge covering areas such as statistics, machine learning, and AI.

However, the possession of such knowledge alone does not enable the application of the knowledge to real-world problems.

Waseda University offers a program that covers all aspects of data science from the basics to application, with the objective of ensuring that students not only acquire the knowhow, but also learn about the approaches to data science, as well as develop the skills to apply data analysis methods independently. This program is open not only to students who wish to gain in-depth knowledge of data science, but also to students from the humanities and students who are new to data science.

Education Policy

In the Data Science Educational Program, Waseda University offers a program in which students not only study the theories of data science that are necessary in every field of study, but also acquire the skills to handle and analyze data in the real world at the same time. Through this program, we aim to equip students with the ability to integrate data science with their knowledge in their areas of expertise, and to apply these skills.

Features of the Curriculum

The Data Science Educational Program is offered fully on-demand, and can be taken anywhere, at any time. In this program, students not only study the theories of data science that are necessary in every field of study, but also acquire the skills to handle and analyze data in the real world at the same time. On top of that, they also learn approaches that tie in these new skills and knowledge with their knowledge in their areas of expertise. To that end, the program is structured systematically as four course groups, A, B, C, and D, to help students learn about data science in stages from the basics to development.

If students do not understand the contents in a course, they can use chat and BBS, as well as receive online or face-to-face support with the Learning Assistant (LA) by making use of the Math and Stat Center (MSC).

Course Subjects

For students learning about data science for the first time (Overview of Course Group A)

Data science is an academic discipline that places importance on the type of data and the purpose for utilizing the data. We recommend students who are learning about data science for the first time to start with Course Group A. Students will learn about the concepts of data science through an integrated approach in the subjects “Introduction to Data Science alpha/beta/gamma/delta.” On the other hand, those who wish to focus on statistics can do so in “Statistical Literacy alpha/beta.” Students can also take up the challenge of “Data Science Practice” and apply the data science concepts and skills they have learnt so far. In this subject, they will practice using the data they have obtained.

Certification Program in Data Science

As a part of the Data Science Educational Program, the Certification Program in Data Science has been established for the purpose of setting out clear targets for the study of data science. This Certification Program endorses and certifies students’ proficiency in data science based on four levels. By clearly setting out the targets to be attained at each level, it provides students with the opportunity to learn about data science in a way that matches their individual interests. Students who have fulfilled the requirements for each level are presented with a certificate from the Global Education Center.

Certification Program in Data Science

Waseda University promotes and supports research and education in the field of data science through the fusion of “expertise” with “data science.” The Global Education Center, in cooperation with the Center for Data Science, offers the Data Science Educational Program to all undergraduate and graduate students, making it possible for all students of Waseda University, regardless of school/department and year of study, to learn about data science starting from the basics. As a part of the Data Science Educational Program, the Certification Program in Data Science has been established for the purpose of setting out clear targets for the study of data science. Today, it has become possible to acquire a wide variety as well as massive volumes of data, thanks to the advancement of information and communication technology such as the Internet and IoT. As a result, there is strong demand for data science, which utilizes such data, in various academic fields and in society. Data science is an academic discipline that seeks to arrive at rational and clear decision-making, as well as to derive logical proof, through data. Data and knowledge in the area of expertise that provides a basis for decision-making are of vital importance toward obtaining the desired decision from the data. Based on this, it is clear that data science fulfills its potential through its integration with the learner’s area of expertise.

We hope that many students will study data science in order to apply it to their own areas of expertise, and take advantage of the Certification Program to enhance their attainments in the field of data science and develop their career potential.
