About the Society

The Society of Social Sciences was founded by the School of Social Science, Waseda University in 1982 in order to conduct research in social sciences and other various sciences, to publish the aforementioned research, and to ensure its findings are reflected in educational activities.

The society shall comprise the following members.

  • (1)Regular members, being tenured faculty of the Waseda University School of Social Sciences.
  • (2)Student members, being students enrolled at the School of Social Sciences or the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Waseda University.
  • (3)Research associate members, being research associates at the School of Social Sciences, Waseda University not enrolled in the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Waseda University as students.
  • (4)Supporting members, recommended by the chairman of the society and approved by the Board of Trustees.

The Society undertakes the following activities in order to achieve the abovementioned objectives.

  • (1)Publishing “Waseda Studies in Social Sciences”, an academic journal, at least once every year.
  • (2)Holding workshops and lectures.
  • (3)Carrying out other activities deemed necessary in order to achieve the objectives of the Society.

Regulations of the Society of Social Sciences, Waseda University

Article 1. Name & Office
The name of the Society shall be the Society of Social Sciences, Waseda University, and the office thereof shall be in the School of Social Sciences, Waseda University.
Article 2. Objectives
The objectives of the Society shall be to conduct research in social sciences and other various sciences, to publish the aforementioned research, and to ensure its findings are reflected in educational activities.
Article 3. Organization
The Society shall comprise the following members.
  • (1)
    Regular members, being tenured faculty of the Waseda University School of Social Sciences.
  • (2)
    Student members, being students enrolled at the School of Social Sciences or the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Waseda University.
  • (3)
    Research associate members, being research associates at the School of Social Sciences, Waseda University not enrolled in the Graduate School of Social Sciences, Waseda University as students.
  • (4)
    Supporting members, recommended by the chairman of the society and approved by the Board of Trustees.
Article 4. Admission Fees & Membership Fees, etc.
The Society shall comprise the following members.
  • 1.
    Members shall pay the following fees to the society in accordance with their membership status.
    • (1)
      Regular members: ¥2,000 admission fee; ¥3,000 annual membership fee
    • (2)
      Research associate members and supporting members: ¥1,000 admission fee; ¥1,500 annual membership fee
    • (3)
      Student members: ¥1,000 admission fee; ¥1,000 annual membership fee
  • 2.
    The Society shall be permitted to accept donations for the purpose of the achievement of its objectives from members and other persons.
Article 5. Activities
The Society shall undertake the following activities in order to achieve the abovementioned objectives of Article 2.
  • (1)
    Publishing “Waseda Studies in Social Sciences”, an academic journal, at least once every year.
  • (2)
    Holding workshops and lectures.
  • (3)
    Carrying out other activities deemed necessary in order to achieve the objectives of the Society.
Article 6. Board of Trustees
The Society shall undertake the following activities in order to achieve the abovementioned objectives of Article 2.
  • 1.
    The Board of Trustees shall be made up of regular members.
  • 2
    The Board of Trustees shall deliberate upon important Society affairs when called together by the chairman.
Article 7. Officers
  • 1.
    The Society shall have the following officers.
    • (a)
      A chairman
      The chairman shall represent the Society and preside over Society affairs.
    • (b)
      A vice-chairman
      The vice-chairman shall assist the chairman and deputize for the chairman when necessary.
    • (c)
      Two auditors
      The auditors shall audit the accounts of the Society.
    • (d)
      Several academic journal officers
      The academic journal officers shall publish the “Waseda Studies in Social Sciences” and conduct other activities in accordance with the abovementioned provisions of Article 5.
      The chairman and the vice-chairman shall be academic journal officers ex officio. Two of the academic journal officers shall be responsible for finances.
  • 2.
    The chairman and other officers shall be elected by mutual vote of the Board of Trustees.
  • 3.
    The term of office of a Society officer shall be one year, and reappointment shall be permitted.
Supplemental Provisions
  • 1.
    A majority vote of the members of the Board of Trustees at a meeting at which at least two-thirds of the aforementioned members are present shall be required in order to revise the regulations of this society.
  • 2.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on April 1, 1982.
  • 3.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on April 1, 1994.
  • 4.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on June 11, 1998.
  • 5.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on July 9, 1998.
  • 6.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on June 8, 2000.
  • 7.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on June 1, 2005.
  • 8.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on April 12, 2007.
  • 9.
    These society regulations shall come into effect on June 12, 2008.
