Call for Applications: Japanese-English literary translation workshop (Deadline: Sept. 30, 2024)
国際文学館では、2024年11月20日（水）に開催されるワークショップに参加する日英翻訳者を募集します。現在、日本文学のもっともすぐれた英訳者の一人であるポリー・バートンさんを講師に迎え、文芸翻訳の実践技能を高める機会を提供します。
ワークショップについて
- 日時：2024年11月20日（水）10:30 – 16:00
- 会場：早稲田大学国際文学館
- 対面・オンライン：対面のみ
- 参加費用：無料。ただし交通費、宿泊費などは支給しません。
- 定員：10名
- 参加資格：どなたでも応募できますが、応募者全員の提出書類を審査の上、合格者のみ参加を認めます。
- 方法：金井美恵子の短篇「家族アルバム」の最初の三段落（「かき氷と母親は言うのだが……」から「男の子供がウヨウヨしていたのだった」まで）を全員があらかじめ英訳して提出し、短篇全体を読んできた上で当日ディスカッションを行なう（使用言語は主として英語）。
We invite aspiring Japanese-to-English translators to apply for a free in-person workshop scheduled on November 20, 2024 at the Waseda International House of Literature, led by Polly Barton.
応募方法
参加希望者は、2024年9月30日（月）までに、以下をメールで提出してください。
- 履歴書 形式自由。日英翻訳出版経験がある場合はそれも記入してください。
- カバーレター このワークショップで何を学びたいか、どういう点で貢献できると思うかを述べたもの。長さは自由。（履歴書、カバーレターとも、英語・日本語どちらでも可）
- サンプル翻訳 英語1000語程度。日本語の原文も添えること。すでに出版されたものでも、未発表のものでもよい。
- 提出先 [email protected] （件名 “November workshop”としてください）
審査の上、合否を2024年10月15日（火）までに全員に連絡します。参加を認められた方には、2024年11月5日（火）までに翻訳を提出していただきます。
Applicants are required to submit the following:
- Your CV including your translation experience
- A cover letter explaining why you wish to take part in the workshop, and what you believe you would contribute to the workshop
- A sample translation: about 1000 English words. Please submit both the Japanese original and your English translation. Both published and unpublished materials are accepted
- Please send your application to [email protected] with the subject “November workshop”
The deadline for application is September 30, 2024.
The results of the screening will be notified to all the applicants by October 15. Successful applicants will be required to submit their translation of the first three paragraphs of “家族アルバム”, a short story by Mieko Kanai, and to read the whole story before the workshop.

講師紹介
ポリー・バートン
日本文学・ノンフィクション翻訳者。英国在住。最近の翻訳に柴崎友香『春の庭』、津村記久子『この世にたやすい仕事はない』、金井美恵子『軽いめまい』、柚木麻子『BUTTER』など。松田青子『おばちゃんたちのいるところ』英訳は世界幻想文学大賞を受賞（短篇集部門）。2019年、フィッツカラルド・エディションズ主催エッセイ賞を受賞し、同社から2021年、日本語に関する考察を中心とする長篇エッセイFifty Soundsを刊行。
Polly Barton
Polly Barton is an award-winning translator of Japanese literature and nonfiction, based in the UK. Recent translations include Spring Garden by Tomoka Shibasaki, There’s No Such Thing as an Easy Job by Kikuko Tsumura, Mild Vertigo by Mieko Kanai and Butter by Asako Yuzuki. Her translation of Where the Wild Ladies Are by Aoko Matsuda won a World Fantasy Award in 2021. After being awarded the 2019 Fitzcarraldo Editions Essay Prize, she published Fifty Sounds in 2021, her reflections on the Japanese language.
