There are roughly three types of programs: Study abroad (long term), Study abroad (short term), and studying at another domestic university.
In addition, Waseda University offers two types of study abroad programs: study abroad programs based on the agreements between universities, called “University-wide Programs”, which are offered by Center for International Educaton, and study abroad programs based on the agreements between departments, called “Departmenal Programs”, which are offered by the School of Political Science and Economics (SPSE).

These are programs where you study at a foreign university that offers a double degree curriculum while you are still enrolled at Waseda. If you meet certain requirements, you can graduate with designated degrees from both Waseda and the host university. To complete the double degree program at the host university, you need to show high-level of reading, listening, and conversation skills in a foreign language. Consecutive Degree Program | This is a program to obtain a Bachelor’s degree from the SPSE and a Master’s degree from the University of Essex (Essex) within four years. If you are selected for the program, you can obtain two degrees in a sequence by studying in Essex for one year after graduating from SPSE in three years. In the case you do not find any programs offered by Waseda University that meet your needs and you will enroll in a university or an institution of higher education abroad, or a language training institute affiliated with a university abroad, you have to submit necessary documents for “Privately funded study abroad,” be interviewed and screened by the School Steering Committee, and obtain permission from the School of Political Science and Economics ( “SPSE”). Therefore, please plan well in advance. For more details, please refer to the Study Abroad System. In addition, you are required to obtain permission from the host university and pay the tuition fees and living expenses yourself (As an enrollment fee, students pay 50,000 yen per semester to Waseda University).
If you request that the period during which you study abroad is counted toward the number of years of enrollment at Waseda University, the credits that you obtain at the host university have to be recognized as necessary for graduation from the School of Political Science and Economics; therefore please refer to the Credit Transfer and contact the administrative office before or during your study abroad if you have any questions.
In addition, Waseda University offers the system called “Extra Course Registration” that enables students to newly take intensive courses during the spring or summer vacation or courses offered in the summer or winter quarter when they return to Japan from studying abroad. For more details, please refer to the Course registration.
In the case you do not find any programs offered by Waseda University that meet your needs and you will enroll in a general language school or community college abroad, please apply for “Leave of Absence from the School.” For more details, please refer to the “Leave of Absence from the School”.
Please note that the credits you obtain at the host university are NOT counted toward those required for graduation from the SPSE. In addition, the period during which you study abroad is NOT counted toward the number of years of enrollment at Waseda University.

SPSE recruits students in the fall (September to October) and winter (January to February). We will provide information about the second round of applications in December only for universities that did not reach their capacity during the first round.

If you are selected as a candidate after internal screening, you will be qualified to apply for the program at the host university as a student recommended by Waseda University. However, this does not guarantee that you will be accepted. Even after you are selected as a candidate, you need to continue to follow the application procedures, prepare to fly to the country of your host university, and improve your language skills. The host university will provide students with information about applying to the host university, housing, visas, etc. Students are responsible for reviewing and completing the procedures.
Students will need to prepare according to a tighter schedule once they have been accepted for enrolment by the host university, so please check the host university’s instructions regularly, which will be sent directly to you for information.

The following fees must be paid to Waseda University while the student is on study abroad regardless of whether the student is paying tuition to Waseda.

Students receiving scholarships prior to study abroad from JASSO, Waseda University, private or public institutions must complete the relevant procedures listed below before departure or / and upon return at the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section. Failure to complete these procedures in a timely manner may negatively affect future scholarship payments.
1. JASSO (grants/ loans)
・JASSO scholarships received prior to study abroad will be considered “Scholarship Being Granted” during students’ study abroad periods. Students who wish to suspend scholarship during study abroad should submit a “Request For Suspension of Scholarship” to the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section.
・Status for students who are receiving JASSO’s “grant-” scholarship and will simultaneously receive funds from an overseas study support system will differ depending on the year they enrolled.
Enrolled before AY2019→basically, status of “Scholarship Being Granted” will continue (“Request for Continuation of Scholarship During Study Abroad” needs to be submitted.)
Enrolled in AY2019 and thereafter→“Suspension of Scholarship”
・If you are scheduled to go study abroad with the status of “Leave of Absence,” please contact the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section before departure.
2. Waseda University Scholarships
If you participate in a study abroad program (whether as an “Enrolled Student,” a “Study Abroad” student, or otherwise) while receiving a scholarship from Waseda University, you are required to contact the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section in advance. Depending on the scholarship, there are cases where participation in study abroad may affect the amount of money you can receive, or make you ineligible to receive your scholarship. Also, students affected in this way may be asked to return any scholarship money received up to that point either partially or in full.
3. Private or public government scholarships
All students receiving private and/or local government scholarships who participate in a study abroad program (whether as an “Enrolled Student”, a “Study Abroad” student, or otherwise) are required to notify the Scholarships and Financial Assistance Section in advance. Procedures and conditions related to study abroad vary based on the organization.
The period of your study abroad is not deemed to begin on the date of your departure, but is treated as follows:

*If you start studying abroad in the middle of a semester, you should consult with our office and decide on whether you start from April or from September. According to the program regulations, you are required to return to and resume your education at Waseda University after your study abroad period is over.

4. Notice of Approval to Study Abroad
“Notice of Approval to Study Abroad” will be mailed to your guarantor by the office after the approval by the School Steering Committee.
Changing the Details of Your Study Abroad
Requests to changes the details of your study abroad are generally not accepted. However, if you must change the details of your study abroad due to unavoidable circumstances, report to the SPSE office immediately beforehand and receive approval.
Cancellation of Your Study Abroad
In case you must return to Japan due to health or other reasons, report to the Administrative Section immediately. Your Study Abroad Program may be cancelled in certain cases.
All participants in Waseda University’s study abroad programs are required to purchase an overseas travel insurance plan. Those who are part of the University-wide, departmental exchange program agreements and Privatery financed are required to purchase an overseas travel insurance plan designated by Waseda University.
Please be aware that depending on the host institution, you may be required to purchase a local insurance program in addition, in order to cover certain treatments (such as dental treatment) that are not included in the insurance designated by Waseda University, or to comply with the visa regulations (immigration law) of the host university/country. In that case, please note beforehand that you need to purchase a local insurance in addition to the insurance designated by Waseda University.
You can check the insurance premiums and coverage details of the overseas travel insurance with which Waseda University has concluded a comprehensive contract by applying here (application available until 2023/10/31).Application forms are available at the SPSE Admin Office(10th floor, Building 3), so please visit the Office if you wish to receive them.
Students who complete their study abroad have to submit the following forms immediately.

Foreign students participating in study abroad programs must complete various immigration procedures, aside from applying for visa to study abroad, in order to re-enter Japan upon completion of their study abroad program.
Please read the information on the website of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Immigration Services Bureau, the Ministry of Justice, and perform all the necessary procedures. For more details, please refer to the “VISA/Status of Residence” on the website of Center for International Education.

Course registration before and after studying abroad
(1) Students returning from studying abroad during Spring semester at Waseda will be able to register courses of the next Fall semester.
(2) Students returning from studying abroad during Fall semester at Waseda will be able to register courses of the next Spring semester.
(3) The maximum number of credits for courses in which students can enroll after the study abroad is 20, just like any other semester. However, if you register any courses as the “Extra Course Registration”, the credits you earn will be counted towards this maximum.

*If there are any automatically registered courses held during your study abroad period, they will automatically be cancelled as the semester starts.
Students are NOT allowed to register any courses including on-demand courses during their study abroad except for “Extra Course Registration” which is the system enabling students to take courses offered in the summer or the winter quarter or intensive courses during the spring or summer vacation, when they return to Japan from studying abroad. For details, please consult with the SPSE Office.

Only “Advanced Seminar”(and “Thesis”) will be automatically registered for eligible students.
You will need to register for other required courses by themselves, whether if it is your first time taking the course or reenrolling after failing that course in previous semesters.
After you start your course, you may choose to participate in a summer school or to study abroad. In order to defer your studies halfway through, you are required to apply for intermission during the allotted time period. After returning from study leave, you may take the course by applying for resumption during the allotted time period. This is applicable for semester and full-year courses.
“Extra Course Registration” refers to the system that enables students to newly take intensive courses during the spring or summer vacation or courses offered in the summer or the winter quarter, when they return to Japan from studying abroad. For the courses you took for extra course registration, the grading will be done during that semester. However, the credits you register for extra course registration will be counted as credits you register for the semester you are re-enrolled in.

If you have passed “Advanced Seminar I” before your study abroad, the next Advanced Seminar of the same instructor will be registered automatically after your study abroad. In some cases, your instructor may not be in charge of “Advanced Seminar” after your study abroad. In that case, please consult with your instructor beforehand about your plan.

In addition, Waseda has an alumni network both inside and outside Japan. Alumni associations of Waseda are called “the Branches or the Tomonkais”, and those based in a foreign country or region are called “the Overseas Tomonkais”. There are also “Japanese chapters of overseas Tomonkais” which consist of members who have returned to Japan from living in a foreign country. In these Tomonkais, we promote and support exchanges not only between Waseda alumni but also between Waseda alumni and current Waseda University students. It is possible to contact Waseda alumni living abroad in order to obtain information on the area, local exchange events, and jobs and career after graduation.
