概要
小札と呼ばれる長方形の鉄板を綴じ合わせて作られたのが挂甲である。挂甲は胴体部分から膝上までを覆う草摺までが一連のものであり、部分によって小札の形状を変えることで人間の体の曲線に対応している。益子天王塚古墳からは約千枚の小札が出土しており、一段を構成する枚数や小札の形状から、連結関係を復原することが可能な部分もある。渦状に巻いた裾札の状態や木質の遺存状態から、箱に収められた状態で副葬されたと考えられている。
Keiko armor was made by attaching rectangular steel plates, or scales, to each other. Keiko armor is a single series that coves the body, down to the lower-body to above the knee. It matches the curvature of the human body by changing the shape of the scale in certain areas. About 1,000 scales were excavated from Mashiko Tennozuka mound. There are some where the connective relationship of the scales can be recreated according to the number that comprises one layer, or the shape of the scale. The state of the susozane hem portion, which had been rolled into a cylinder, and the state of preservation of the wood suggest that the armor was placed in a wooden box for burial.
