When decking out in their finest clothes, Ainu women wore tamasai necklaces. A wide variety of glass beads are strung together to create the necklace, and some have particularly large glass beads or ornamental medallions (shitoki) on the lower end. Those that are especially large and grand are more like a breastplate than a necklace. The glass beads arrived from afar, such as Western Asia and China via Sakhalin. They were later produced in Edo (Tokyo) and Osaka for trade with the Ainu people and were called “Ainu beads.” Some medallions reused parts of Japanese mirrors and armor.
