概要
オヒョウ、シナノキ、ハルニレなどの木の皮の繊維からつくった織物・衣服をアットゥシという。厚司という言葉で日本語にも入ってきている。1着つくるのに2ヶ月以上もかかるといわれる。防水性に優れるため、もともとは漁師が好んで着用した。樹皮には黄褐色の自然な濃淡があり、本州から入ってきた紺木綿などで切伏模様（アップリケ模様）を施すものや、裾や衿、袖に紺色の布を縫いつけ、その上に縄模様の刺繍を施しているものが多くみられる。木綿衣とともにアイヌの衣服を代表するものである。
Attus are textiles and garments made using fiber from the inner bark of trees like Manchurian elm, Japanese lime and Japanese elm. The Ainu word has been adopted in Japan as “atsushi,” which usually refers to Ainu clothing in general. It is said that it can take more than two months to create a single garment. Because it is highly water-resistant, they were originally a favored garment of fishermen. The tree bark has natural brownish-yellow grading. Some are decorated with patchwork using dark-blue cotton from the main Japanese island of Honshu. Many have dark-blue cloth sewn on the hem, collar and sleeves, with rope patterns embroidered over them. Together with cotton garments, attus represent typical Ainu clothing.
