With red as the main color, a woman and maid-in-waiting, heading toward a water basin in a garden, are depicted in the center of the dish in green and yellow. A flower arabesque design in swift, rough strokes is painted on the sides of the front and back of the dish. What appears to be the name of the potter “made by Chen Wenxian” can be seen in red within a double center under the foot of the dish. Called Akae in Japan (Wucai in Chinese), designs are drawn with overglaze enamel on the base material covered with high-fired glaze. It is then fired at a low temperature. The ko-akae type refers to those wares fired at private kilns in Jingdezhen primarily between 1506-1566 during the Ming dynasty. They were exported to Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Japan, and were much prized.
