This is one panel of the shoji-e sliding door painting that used to be on the portable shrine of the Usa Hachimangu Shrine in Oita. It was painted between 1420-21 by Kaga no Kami, an artist in Kyoto who worked for the Imperial Court, during the Muromachi period following the design of a work created during the Kamakura period (Tokuji 2, 1307). The painting is based on a scene from the Devadatta chapter (12th chapter) of the Lotus Sutra. At the center is Shaka Nyorai (Buddha), who is surrounded by bodhisattva to whom he is giving his sermon on Vulture Peak in India. Also depicted are the Dragon King’s daughter presenting a precious gem, and a child (Buddha in a previous life), serving by gathering firewood and drawing water, so that he could learn the teachings of a mountain hermit (Devadatta – a villain – in a previous life).
