These are figures for burial depicting a Bactrian camel, grunting with its head raised, and its rider. The rider has small, narrow eyes, a large, turned-up nose, high cheekbones and square jaw, which are the characteristic features of formidable barbaric people. During the Tang dynasty, barbaric people referred to Persians and Sogdians.
With the exception of its humps, the long hairs of its head and throat, and hooves, a thick coat of brown glaze was applied to the camel. The blanket on its back is separated from other areas using brown and green glaze on a white background. With brown glaze as the primary color, the upper garment and boots worn by the rider are partially glazed with green, with the green at the open collar serving as an accent. There is no glaze on the rider’s cap, face or hands. Although colored after firing, almost all of the paint has now fallen off. There are slight traces of rose pink on the skin, black on the eyes, cap and hair, and red on the mouth.
