概要
当館の山口八九子(はちくし)作品の多くは八九子の次女である山口由李子氏と、由李子氏の遺志を継いだ八九子の姪にあたる畦田孝子氏より受贈。八九子は1890年（明治23年）京都生まれ。生前の八九子は、南画や俳画の分野で著名だったようで、『ホトトギス』の挿画などを描いている。1933年（昭和8年）43歳で没。まとまった数の八九子作品を所蔵するのは京都国立近代美術館、京都市美術館、和歌山県立近代美術館がなどで関東では当館のみである。
Many of the works by Hachikushi Yamaguchi in the Aizu Museum collection were donated by the artist’s daughter Yuriko Yamaguchi, and niece Takako Uneda, who carried out Yuriko’s last wishes. Hachikushi was born in Kyoto in 1890. During his lifetime, he appears to have been celebrated in the Nanga (Southern or literati painting) school of painting and Haiga (Haikai drawing). He drew illustrations for the “Hototogisu” haiku magazine. Hachikushi died in 1933 at the age of 43. Museums that possess a large number of Hachikushi’s works include the National Museum of Modern Art, Kyoto, the Kyoto Municipal Museum of Art and the Museum of Modern Art, Wakayama. Aizu Museum is the only museum in the Kanto region to house a large collection of his works.
