概要
1914年8月、會津八一は郷里新潟から上京した三人の受験生を預かり、この学規四則を作り、机を並べた部屋の床の間の壁に貼ったという。以来、多くの門下生がこの学規を書き与えられてきた。會津は「秋艸道人は我が別号なり。学規は我率先して躬行(きゅうこう)し、範を諸生に示さんことを期す。主張この内にあり、同情この内にあり、反抗また此内にあり。」(「落日庵消息」)と語っている。学生、そして自分自身の人生の指標でもあったのであろう。本作品は、1954年10月、會津博士紀念東洋美術陳列室が旧図書館2階の仮室から第一学生会館奥の別棟に移転した際、陳列室のために特別に書き贈ったものである。
In August 1914, Yaichi Aizu took in three students, who came to Tokyo from Niigata, the prefecture of his origin, to prepare for entrance examinations. He created these four codes of learning and placed it on the wall of the room where the students studied. Since then, many students have been given the Code of Learning. Yaichi Aizu said, “Shuso Dojin is my pseudonym. The hope is that you will take the initiative and serve as a model for other students. The Code contains your assertions, the Code contains your compassion, and the Code contains your resistance.” (From “Rakujitsu An Shosoku”) The Code was probably a guideline not only for his students but also for his own life. This work was especially written for the display room and presented in October 1954 when the Dr. Aizu Memorial Art Display Room was moved from its temporary location on the second floor of the old library to a different wing at the back of the No. 1 Student Union.
