Renzo Kita (1876-1949) was born in Gifu Prefecture. He moved to Tokyo in 1889 and studied under Hosui Yamamoto. In 1897, he enrolled in an elective course at the Tokyo School of Fine Arts. As Hosui’s assistant, he was involved in the painting of stage backdrops. He also served as a foreman in the backdrop division of the Imperial Theater. During the Meiji period, he showed his works at the Hakubakai Exhibition, and during the Taisho and Showa periods, at the Ministry of Education Art Exhibition and the Exhibition of the Imperial Fine Arts Academy. He was a leading artist whose works were qualified to be shown without undergoing a screening process. Many of his works have the Russo-Japanese War and the Pacific War as its theme. They are indispensable in war painting research.
