WISH Domestic Study Trip -Mt.Fuji- (August 2019)

We participated in WISH domestic trip program to Mt. Fuji, which is for 5 days, 4 nights long trip with the aims of visiting rural areas of Japan, finding local problems and improving our variety of skills, which are indispensable in our path during and after university. We visited the Yamanashi and Shizuoka Prefecture of Japan, where the areas of Mt. Fuji located. During the trip not only we climbed Mt. Fuji, but also we visited many places that have historical and cultural connections with Mt. Fuji. For instance, in our first day of the trip, we visited the Togawa Oshi house, a Pilgrim’s inn – the historic house and the component of Mt. Fuji’s UNESCO World Heritage site, where worshippers used to stay before climbing and pray to Mt. Fuji during the Edo period. Thanks to these visits and studies such as this, we grasped more understandings of Mt. Fuji and how Japanese people have outstandingly been preserving the mountain from time to time, which made our climbing to Mt. Fuji more meaningful.

The program was also cooperated with the Fujisan Club, the non-profit organization, focusing on preserving the Mt. Fuji through many environmental activities. The next day after our climb to Mt. Fuji, we participated in the campaign, organized by the Fujisan club as volunteers and we encouraged hikers to bring their garbage back from the mountain by distributing the plastic bags. I was impressed by how the club is actively working on preserving the Mt. Fuji clean; not only it is the cultural heritage place being noticed throughout the world but also it is their “home”.

Even though it was a study trip by WISH residents, we also had lots of fun. We gazed the moon, the stars and the beautiful nature from the high elevation during our climb, which was a brand new and great experience for me. I think even the others felt the same. Together, we also had BBQ party, night walk, hot spring, and cooked Hoto noodles. With the permission by the organizers, some of us even went to play at the Fuji Q Highland amusement park on the last day of the trip. Overall, this trip to Mt. Fuji was full of knowledge, memories, making new friends and challenges of staying outside of our comfort zones. I highly recommend this program to the WISH residents who would like to have valuable, fun and adventurous time.
