FAQ

Waseda University Students Dormitories

In the student dormitory, since this is a space for communal living, the enviroment will be different from your current living enviroment. Since students with diverse perspectives gather at WISH from local areas of Japan and around the world, please consider that community life is different from living alone before applying the dormitory.

【Ex.Waseda International Student House (WISH)】
In principle, four (or three or two in some cases) people make one unit sharing one living room. The Resident may hear living noise, etc. as rooms are fitted with vent holes for natural ventilation and this is a space for communal life. Thus, unit room sessions are regularly carried out, to which all unit residents shall participate and discuss rules within the unit. However please note that daily life noises etc. can be heard unlike in case of living in the apartment or condominium building.

On the Online Request Form, there is a section for an essay asking for reason(s) for applying to your preferred dormitory. The essay and other information provided on the Online Request Form will be considered comprehensively in the screening.

University will value your enthusiasm to enter the dormitory more than amount of income.

Registration number (number given after transmitting the Online Request Form) of the accepted individual will be posted on the Residence Life Center website. Inquires on the result and screening will not be accepted.

It is strongly recommended that students should submit for “Multiple applications”.(Only when they choose one of the dormitories operated by Waseda University (i.e. WISH, Higashi-Fushimi) as their first preference, they can choose ①Waseda University International Dormitories (WID)/Dormy alternatively as their second to seventh preferences or ②Wakeijuku, Crevia Will Waseda or Campus terrace Waseda as your second choice (multiple applications with both ①and ② are not permitted). If you submit multiple applications, you can enter Waseda University Affiliated Dormitories. If you are looking for housing such as apartment or condominium building, we will provide the information of affiliated companies on the result announcement.

The dormitories are not opened for visits since they are the places for living. For more information, please see the “View Housing Video” posted on Residence Life Center Website or so.

Resident Life Center will send entrance documents to individuals accepted to the dormitory. When returning the completed entrance documents, income certificate (copy accepted, tax withholding statement accepted) of the parents or income earner must be enclosed. It is recommended that the certificate be prepared in advance.
*If the amount of the “income of parents or income earner” noted in the Online Request Form differs from the income certificate, acceptance to the dormitory may be cancelled.

Only single rooms are available at Waseda International Student House (WISH) . There are single and twin rooms for Higashi-Fushimi Student Dormitory. The Students do not have the choice of direction in which the rooms faces, floor, room number, or unit, nor are they allowed to switch rooms after entering the dormitory

On the Online Request Form, the students are asked to fill out a roommate / unitmate matching questionnaire. Resident Life Center will use the questionnaire to determine roommate and unit mates. The dormitories encourage interaction with a wide range of people, and usually put students of different nationalities, grades and schools together.

*Waseda International Student House (WISH):
Residents are able to use the internet through a wireless LAN connected to the university network although the university network policy applies to it. Therefore, the usable protocols are limited.
For example, you may not use some applications such as online games. For details, check the Waseda University IT Service Navigation.
In addition, it may be difficult to connect depending on the place and time. Please be aware that lines are provided under a “best effort” type service (Note: this is a service that cannot guarantee communication speeds or service quality) shared within the dormitory. People concerned about communication restrictions and speeds, etc., will need to enter into a contract with a private internet service provider individually. (There are no wired LAN ports in the dormitory so it is necessary to contract for a wireless based service.) Due to device specifications, smartphones and tablets have a weak ability to detect signal compared to computers.
Therefore, when trying to connect to the wireless internet via a smartphone or tablet, please do so from the unit living room or the shared space whenever possible.

*Higashi-Fushimi Student Dormitory:
Residents are required to make a contract with a designated provider.

You may either bring in your own or lease it. More information is provided in the entrance document sent to you.

There are common kitchens in Waseda International Student House (WISH) and Higashi-Fushimi Student Dormitory. Students may cook for themselves, eat out, or purchase ready-made food, but considering financial, nutritional and psychological aspects, we recommend that students cook together and share dishes. Many students who moved out of their parents’ home and starting new life say that they learned how to cook at the dorm and now love to cook.

No. The contract period is set at 2 years for April Admission students and 1.5 years for September Admission students.
