Commencement of trial use of Cabells Predatory Reports, a searchable database of information on predatory academic journals

The recent development of open access publication of research results has been accompanied by serious problems with predatory journals, which publish papers in open access journals without sufficient peer review and/or demand exorbitant publication fees.

If a researcher, without careful consideration, contributes to a predatory journal or publishes with a predatory publisher in order to increase the number of his/her publications, not only might he/she be exploited in terms of unjustifiably high publication fees: he/she might also adversely lower the evaluation of his/her research performance — in some cases, even affecting the credibility of the research activities of Waseda University.

As a supplementary means of preventing postings to predatory journals, we have signed a contract for the use of Predatory Reports (Cabell Publishing Co.), a database of predatory journals, for a period ending at the end of AY 2021. We will use the service on a trial basis until the end of AY 2021, and will decide whether or not to continue the contract in AY 2022 and thereafter, based on the status of usage in AY 2021. →We have decided to extend the usage contract until the end of AY 2025. 【Updated on February. 19, 2025】
