- Can urban ecology of traditional manufactural towns be requalified – Tomoyuki Mashiko
- Abstract
- Japan’s regional towns have formed their own urban ecology, in which social, economic, and cultural activities are nurtured by the organic relationship between the historic core district and the surrounding countryside, such as Satoyama and Satogawa. The urban ecology fostered by the organic links between urban and rural areas has been scattered by the impact of modernization, and there is a need for contemporary attempts at Machizukuri to reunite these links. This chapter introduces emerging regional management initiatives that integrate the Old Town and the surrounding Satoyama using Kiryu Town as a case study, a town that has prospered through traditional textile manufacturing since its birth, and discusses the requalification of urban ecology.
