Achievements

Enhancement of Reputation

Overview

Multiscale Analysis, Modelling and Simulation unit has held 47 international workshops since the project’s inception in order to enhance its reputation. Especially in the fields of fluid mathematics and quantum physics/mathematical physics, international workshops have been held continuously, and in addition to academic lectures by Joint Appointment Professors and internationally renowned researchers, opportunities for student presentations have been provided. We have also worked to strengthen ties with overseas universities, jointly holding international workshops (Germany, Italy, Indonesia, Taiwan) and sessions (Oxford University). In addition, we have also engaged in activities that integrate different fields, such as holding symposiums in collaboration with the Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy unit.

International Workshop Series

Since 2015, the “International Workshop on Multiphase Flows Analysis, Modelling and Numerics” and the “International Workshop on Fundamental Problems in Mathematical and Theoretical Physics”  have been held continuously in the fields of fluid mathematics and quantum physics/mathematical physics, respectively.

International Collaboration

Germany-Japan International Workshop Series

As part of the “Japanese-German Graduate Externship Program” of the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS), the Japan-Germany Joint Graduate School Program “Fluid Mathematics” has been conducted since AY2009 in collaboration with the IRTG 1529 project of the Technical University of Darmstadt, Germany, and since 2015, Multiscale Analysis, Modelling and Simulation unit has been supporting the activities of this program and has continued to organize the “Germany-Japan International Workshop”.

Co-organization of international workshops

Multiscale Analysis, Modelling and Simulation unit has also promoted efforts to hold international workshops in collaboration with overseas universities, with international workshops held jointly with Taiwan (National Taiwan University, etc.) in December 2016, Italy (University of Pisa, etc.) in February 2018 and February 2019, and further with Indonesia (Jenderal Soedirman University, etc.) in March 2018.

Waseda University-Oxford University Joint Session

In the “International Workshop on Multiphase Flows: Analysis, Modelling and Numerics”, held in December 2020, the joint session, “Oxford-Waseda in Mathematics,” was held to commemorate the signing of an inter-university agreement between Oxford University in the UK and Waseda University. The joint session was streamed online and videos were also posted on YouTube cheannel.

Cross-disciplinary Cooperative Activities

Collaboration in Social Sciences and Mathematical Sciences

Led by Joint Appointment Professor (AY2020-2022), Naoki Masuda (The State University of New York at Buffalo), and in collaboration with the Positive/Empirical Analysis of Political Economy unit, we held the following three international workshops inviting social scientists and science and mathematics researchers from Japan and abroad who address social science problems using networks and broader complex systems methods.
