Takahata Lab

Welcome to Takahata Lab!

Name: SUN Wenchong
Grade & Program: 2nd Year, Master’s program

Laboratory Focus

Our laboratory is dedicated to the advancement of photonic devices and their integrated circuits, primarily based on silicon photonics technology:

High-Speed and Low-Power Optical Logic Units: We are working on the creation of innovative photonic logic units using Mach-Zehnder interferometers, microring resonators, and multi-mode interferometers based on silicon photonics technology in order to break through the limitations of logic operations using electric circuits and to achieve high-speed logic operations with minimal power consumption.

Slow light waveguide in photonic crystal: Waveguides in photonic crystals have a slow light effect, which, when well designed, slows down the speed of light propagation very much. We are investigating new photonic crystal structures that can generate a stronger slow-light effect over a wide wavelength range.

Laboratory Environment

Our laboratory features two main areas: the student room and the computer room. In the student room, each student has his or her own seat. We often use the whiteboard to share thoughts with others and brainstorm. In the computer room, we have powerful servers dedicated to optical simulations, which are a major tool in our research.

Our lab has a friendly atmosphere where we help each other and senior doctoral students are very helpful, provide guidance and answer any research-related questions. Newly joined students can also work on their research in a positive way.

Research Life

Students in our lab first build a solid foundation in our research field through courses. In weekly lab seminars, students discuss recent academic journal and conference papers, and we also present our own research plans and progress. The seminars are a very useful opportunity to gain valuable advice and research inspiration.

Other Activities

Following our seminars, we often enjoy lunch or dinner together as a way to foster camaraderie. On holidays, we organize group outings like meals and hiking trips to strengthen our sense of community. Some members have secured internships during their breaks and received job offers as a result. If you are interested in working on novel photonic devices and circuits, you’re welcome to join our Lab. Hope you find it to be a rewarding experience!
