この研究部会では、貫戦期、すなわち1920年代後半から、十五年の戦争時代を挟んで、1960年頃までの昭和前期おける日本及びアジアにおけるジャーナリズムの展開を、特にこの時期に大量に発行されたパンフレット類を中心に、新聞や放送および書籍と並行して刊行された活字メディアが、どのように知識階層および大衆と結びつき、近代日本の公共的言論空間を構成してきたのかを再考する。
具体的には、先の戦間期メディア史研究会の時に、サントリー文化財団の助成を得て実施した、各機関に所蔵されている社会運動関係、植民地関係およびジャーナリズム関係のパンフレットの資料調査によって作成した670点のパンフレット目録を基に拡充する。また、その内容と他のメディアとの関係を把握し類型化して、パンフレットの全体像を明らかにする。また、海外のエフェメラ研究や戦間期メディア研究との比較検討を行い、従来あまり顧みられてこなかったパンフレットを、短命なエフェメラ・メディアと大規模に組織化されたマス・メディアとの接合点として、その実態と意義を明らかにしたい。
方法は文献調査とのその分析が中心となるが、貫戦期を、大量に発行されたパンフレットに対して不穏文書臨時取締法が施行されるようになった戦前期（1925～1937）、商業パンフ
レットに倣って内閣情報委員会により国策パンフレット『週報』が発行された戦中期(1937～1945)、出版法が廃止された戦後期(1945～1960)の三つに区分し、内容の分析を行う。それぞれの時期に、時事的なトピックを論ずる書き手として新聞記者や知識人が登場するが、彼らと他のメディアとの関係、パンフレットのテーマや表現などを把握し類型化する。例えば、新聞や雑誌の記事を元にしたもの、演説や講演を活字化したもの、書籍の宣伝となっているものなど幾つかの定型が考えられ、種類別に数量的にも整理できる。中には匿名の筆者も少なくないが、類似の内容を論じたものとの比較検討には、AIを利用してテキストを照合したりパターンを見出す作業も試みる。その成果を研究会で随時、発表を行い、相互に進捗状況を把握し啓発し合うことによって、貫戦期のジャーナリズムの全体像を明らかにしていきたい。

This research group examines re-examines the development of journalism in Japan and Asia during the early Shōwa period, from the period of sustained warfare—namely the late 1920s—through the fifteen-year war era, up to around 1960. Focusing particularly on the vast quantities of pamphlets published during this time, it considers how printed media—published in parallel with newspapers, broadcasting, and books—interacted with the intellectual class and the masses, thereby constituting the public sphere of discourse in modern Japan.
Specifically, this will be expanded upon the catalogue of 670 pamphlets compiled through research into pamphlets related to social movements, colonial affairs, and journalism held by various institutions. This research was conducted with funding from the Suntory Foundation for Cultural Activities during the previous Interwar Media History Research Group. Furthermore, the content and relationships with other media will be identified and categorized to clarify the overall picture of pamphlets. Furthermore, comparative analysis with overseas ephemera studies will be conducted. This aims to shed light on the reality and significance of pamphlets – hitherto largely overlooked – as a point of convergence between ephemeral media with short lifespans and large-scale, organized mass media.
The methodology centers on literature review and analysis. The period is divided into three phases for content analysis: the pre-war period (1925–1937), when the Temporary Control of Subversive Publications Act was enacted in response to mass pamphlet distribution; the wartime period (1937–1945), when the Cabinet Information Committee issued the state-policy pamphlet Shūhō (Weekly Report) modelled on commercial pamphlets; and the post-war period (1945–1960), when the Publication Act was abolished.
In each period, newspaper journalists and intellectuals emerged as writers addressing topical issues. We will identify and categorize their relationship with other media, alongside the themes and expressions within the pamphlets. Several standard formats can be discerned, such as those based on newspaper or magazine articles, transcriptions of speeches or lectures, and promotional material for books. These can also be organized quantitatively by type. While anonymous authors are common, we will attempt to utilize AI to collate texts and identify patterns for comparative analysis with pamphlets discussing similar content. We intend to present these findings at regular research meetings, mutually sharing progress and insights to clarify the overall picture of journalism during the war period.
