Call for Applications: The WIHL Translation Workshop

The WIHL Translation Workshop

The Waseda International House of Literature invites participants to join a study group for the translation of literature written in Japanese.

About the Workshop

  • Dates and times: 5:30 pm – 7:30 pm on Tuesdays starting June 24th, 2025, and continuing monthly on July 22nd, August 26th, September 30th, October 28th, and November 25th. Participants may attend one or any of these sessions.
  • Venue: The Waseda International House of Literature
  • Format: In-person
  • Fee: none
  • Group size: 10-20 people
  • Participants:
    • Translators of Japanese-language literature
    • Graduate students of literature or translation with experience translating from Japanese
    • Practitioners in related fields (scholars, editors, writers, etc) are also welcome to get in touch
  • Purpose: To research practice-based methods and theories relating to the translation of Japanese-language literature
  • Method: Discussion on participant presentations and other materials
  • Languages used: Both Japanese and English. Translators working into languages other than English are also welcome.
  • Facilitator: Asa Yoneda (Research Associate at the Waseda International House of Literature)

Application Guidelines

To join the group for the first session (June 24th), apply with the below by June 10th. Further applications will be considered on a rolling basis.

  • Your resumé in any format
  • A cover letter explaining your interest in participating in the study group. Please also note your availability for remaining sessions.
  • For translators and graduate students: a sample translation of one short story or similar, or an excerpt of approximately 3000 words in English (or equivalent length in other languages), with the Japanese original. Published translations preferred.
  • Send your application (or any enquiries) to [email protected] with the subject “Translation study group”. Applicants will be notified of screening results within a week.

Facilitator bio

Asa Yoneda

Asa Yoneda is a translator and a research associate at the Waseda International House of Literature. Recent work includes the novels Under the Eye of the Big Bird by Hiromi Kawakami, Idol, Burning by Rin Usami, and The Premonition by Banana Yoshimoto, as well as stories by Natsuko Kuroda, Atsushi Nakajima, Midori Osaki, and Kenji Miyazawa.
