French-Japanese Literary Translation and Its Evolution — From the Classics to Contemporary Works and Manga
In this exhibition, we invite you to explore the recent history of literary translation between Japan and France, from the late twentieth century to the present. Starting with fiction and poetry and moving into manga and bandes dessinées, you will discover how translation has drawn the two languages closer together and played a part in the production of world literature. The story of French literature in Japan begins in the Meiji era. More recently, the exchange has become increasingly reciprocal as translation flourishes both from French into Japanese and from Japanese into French, broadening the bridge between the two cultures. The exhibition will also offer a glimpse behind the curtain to cast light on how translations are made. Join us on a journey through the past, present, and future of literature, guided by the art of translation.
