Waseda University launched its first-ever English-language academic podcast, “Rigorous Research, Real Impact,” on November 5, 2024. Now in its third season, the podcast brings Waseda’s research and expertise in the humanities and social sciences to listeners around the world through engaging conversations about research, society, and contemporary issues.

“Rigorous Research, Real Impact” is available for free on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Amazon Music, and YouTube.

The first season featured seven Waseda researchers in the humanities and social sciences, who discussed their latest research, its potential impact on society, and their experiences working at Waseda in Japan. The 20- to 40-minute episodes offered listeners an accessible introduction to the researchers and the ideas behind their work.

Season 2 brought eight Waseda researchers together with PhD students for shorter, approximately 15-minute conversations about impactful research, life and work at Waseda, and the benefits of English-based degree programs. Topics ranged from legendary game designer Hideo Kojima and territorial disputes in Northeast Asia to hybrid peacebuilding.

In Season 3, three Waseda students take on the role of MCs, guiding relaxed conversations with eight researchers. Across approximately 15- to 20-minute episodes, researchers introduce their areas of expertise, explore connections between their research and current social debates and trending news, and share their experiences teaching in Waseda’s English-based degree programs. Topics include Japan’s economy, labor and migration, business, Japanese culture, and AI.

The podcast is especially suited to prospective international students, those considering further study or research in Japan, and anyone interested in gaining fresh perspectives on contemporary issues through the expertise of Waseda researchers.
