Background of establishment

As part of Waseda University’s efforts to restructure its educational system for the development of global leaders and to shift its focus to interactive, problem-finding, and problem-solving education under Waseda Vision 150, in addition to the usual individual study spaces, the university is gradually developing and enhancing “Learning Commons” which support students’ independent and active learning, and offers possibilities for diverse learning styles.

In order to realize such a learning environment, new learning spaces were constructed on the 2nd floor of Building No. 3 on the Waseda Campus in AY2014, on the 1st floor of Building No. 7 and Building No. 19-2 (Waseda Co-creation Space) in AY2015, and on the 2nd floor of Waseda Arena, Building No. 37 in AY2019.
These spaces for group study and other multi-person learning are called “W Space” at Waseda University, and more similar spaces are planned to be established in the future.

About the name W Space

W(aseda) Space is a facility that embodies a space that students can use casually for exchanges and activities, as proposed by “Team Wasejo,” which won the gold prize in the 2012 Waseda Vision 150 Student Competition.
