Waseda University's sports activities began in the Meiji era when it was established as Tokyo Senmon Gakko. We have valued physical education and health, not only through clubs but also by holding grand sports days. Additionally, in 1905, the baseball club became Japan's first athletic club to travel to the United States, learning the latest baseball techniques and disseminating them throughout Japan. In this way, Waseda Sports has led the student sports world, producing outstanding athletes and people who contribute to society. Feel the pride and unity of Waseda through the glorious stories and current activities of Waseda Sports.

This time, we visited four museums through quizzes. In fact, the pillars of Waseda University's main gate from the Meiji era are used for the entrance to one of these. Now, which museum is it used in?

When I was a student, I loved reading and often visited Aizu Museum and the Theater Museum. Gradually, I became interested in the architecture and exhibits of facilities, and my favorites were the cute "stone sheep" outside of Aizu Museum and the interior design of the theater museum that makes visitors feel rich. did.
We recommend visiting museums and art galleries while imagining things on your own. As you look at the exhibits, try to imagine things like, "What does this painting mean?" or "How did ancient people use this tool?" It is OK even if the information differs from facts, historical evaluations, historical background, etc. It's fun to see new things when you think, "Maybe this is it?" Being able to indulge in viewing without worrying about time is a privilege for university students. Please enjoy this luxurious way to the fullest.

Aizu Museum, Theater Museum, Waseda University History Museum, and Waseda Sports Museum that we introduced this time are all located on campus. There are also other museums such as The Waseda International House of Literature (Haruki Murakami Library) and the Honjo-Waseda Museum, and there are also works of art and cultural resources scattered outside the museum. Waseda University's unique environment is that the campus itself is a museum, where you can access a slightly different space during your free time between classes and student club activities.
Deepening your understanding of Waseda University's history, founding philosophy, and sports trajectory will help you understand Waseda's identity in the world, and will provide hints for your life. Art and culture are also essential for cultivating the "Flexible sensitivity" necessary for global human resources. By coming into contact with exhibits from different eras and regions, you will be able to acquire diverse values.
When I say it like this, it may seem a little difficult. The truth is, each person has a different approach to culture. Rather, the most important thing is to enjoy it from your own perspective. Waseda's museum is generally free, so you don't have to see all the exhibits at once, and it's also meaningful to look at one piece you like over and over again. In extreme terms, it's okay to say, ``It was comfortable because the air conditioning was working.'' I think you'll be lucky if you can find at least one of the 10 exhibits at a museum that you like. Please enjoy free and luxurious "killing time" without being bound by formal viewing methods or specialized knowledge.

Waseda University holds "Waseda Culture and Arts Week" every year, an event that disseminates a wide variety of culture and art. In 2023, it will be from October 9th (Monday/Holiday) to October 20th (Friday). There will be a ``Museum Word Puzzle'' that takes you through the museums introduced in this article, concerts and live performances by music and dance student club, and a Wasemeshist stamp rally at restaurants around the campus. This time, with the catchphrase "Waseda's sacred place," don't miss the special project in collaboration with Saga Prefecture, the birthplace of Shigenobu Okuma! There are also many other events where you can experience the charm of Waseda culture. Please join us.

Building No. 2, which houses Aizu Museum, which houses Oriental artworks and archaeological and ethnic materials, was originally established as a library in 1925. Because of this background, it is important to "look at things carefully" so that it can serve as a gateway to the search for wisdom. In the exhibition of the Tomioka Shigenori Collection that I am in charge of, I have kept captions to a minimum so that people can freely use their minds while viewing the exhibits. You can enjoy the works that change regularly, or you can view the permanent works over and over again. Please feel free to visit us without any prior knowledge.
