Niigata Training (February, 2019)
Mission “What would be the sustainable society like at farming areas where populations are aging and decreasing?”

The locale was Minamiuonuma-city in Niigata, where everything is covered with snow in this season of the year. 5days training was held there and residents could experience things which can only be done in Niigata. They have leaned the good side of  living with great nature and also faced the reality of aging and depopulating area.

5days living experience in Minamiuonuma-city

Sustainable living was a topic I have only come across briefly in my environmentalism class as a middle school student. Therefore, experiencing this subject area first-hand during the trip in Tochikubo, Minamiuonuma-city was a valuable experience. There were many issues that revolved around the small town, prominently the aging population and lack of labor. Even if it was for a day, I was happy to be able to help the elderlies to shovel their snow.

Despite Tochikubo being a tiny town, for some reason it seemed to me as a more lively place than Tokyo. After spending five days there, I realized it was because the people who loved and respected each other. Between every individual, there was a special bond, letting each other know that they all had each other’s back. When living in a busy and large city, there is a tendency to neglect what’s really important in our lives. By spending a few days in Niigata reminded me that at last, connections with our surroundings or a strong sense of belonging is what brings us joy.

Last but not least, getting to know the people on this trip was what made the five days extremely worth it for me. In WISH, we do have many opportunities to meet new people by actively participating in events. However, most of the time it ends up being a one-time thing and is very hard to keep on being friends with people especially when living on a different floor (or studying in different departments). Thank you so much for allowing me to spend time with all the wonderful friends I was able to make this spring break!
