Finding Accommodation (For Exchange Students)

Finding a place to live in Tokyo

Exchange students can apply to the dormitories for exchange students managed by the university. Please refer to this page for details about the dormitories and application procedures.

However, even if you apply, you are not guaranteed a room. Rooms are allocated by lottery to students who apply during a set period each term, but as the dormitories are located within a few minutes walk of the Waseda, Toyama and Nishi Waseda campuses, they are extremely popular and the number of applicants is always more than three times higher than the number of available rooms. Please note that we are unable to meet all students’ requests.

This website introduces affiliated companies that provide student dormitories, shared houses and apartments that are easy for overseas students to apply for. Conditions differ depending on the property, such as how many months in advance you can apply, so we recommend that you start your housing search consultation at an early stage.

Waseda University has several campuses in Shinjuku-ku, in the heart of Tokyo, so it is quite common for students to take a 40-60 minute commute by public transport. Depending on the railway line, it may take a little longer to commute to the campus, but there are advantages, such as lower accommodation costs. Please refer to the following points in your search to find the right place for your needs.

Key points to consider in your search

  • Location – How long will it take to get to the campus? How many transfers?
  • Budget – How much can you spend per month on accommodation?
  • Meals – Whether the property offers meals or not.
  • Features – Whether you prefer privacy (flat type), sharing with others (student dormitories, halls of residence, shared houses, guest houses, etc.) or living with a Japanese host family (homestay).

Housing near campuses

We introduce dormitories and other facilities that provide housing in the neighborhood for overseas and exchange students. Some companies may have a limited number of rooms available for exchange students who are staying for a short period of time. Please contact each company to inquire about room availability and when you can apply.

In addition, if you apply for the univeristy dormitories at the same time and are selected by lottery, you may be charged a cancellation fee by each company. Please be sure to check the cancellation policy before applying.
