Research Ethics Education Courses for Researchers

In accordance with the Rules for Preventive Measures against Research Misconduct and the Investigation Procedures (Article 6-1-1), the University requires that researchers at Waseda take the required research ethics education courses. Instructions on how to take a course and report to Waseda University are given below.

Research Ethics Education Courses

To fulfill the research ethics education requirement, researchers at Waseda University must complete one of the following two courses described below. The certificate of course completion is treated as valid for 5-academic year(including the course completion academic year).

Courses Notes Reporting Method
(1) [eL CoRE] e-Learning Course on Research Ethics provided by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science
  • An English version of this course is available.
  • Average completion time: 90 minutes.
  • Researchers are required to register to obtain an account by themselves via the following website, so that they can take the course (free of charge).

[eL CoRE] e-Learning Course on Research Ethics

* Please register as a user in the “新規登録(個人)/New Registration (individuals)” section of the above website and take the course called “Understanding Research Ethics Through Case Examples―The Attitude of the Conscientious Scientist“.

* If you wish to take the “eL CoRE” again, please create a new account on the new registration page and take the course with the new account. (The completion date on your certificate will not be updated even if you take the course again with your current account.)

* Students do not need to submit the Certificate of Completion here.

Please submit the Certificate of Completion (PDF file) of “eL CoRE” or “eAPRIN” using the MyWaseda submission form (*) stipulated below.

If you have difficulty submitting using the MyWaseda submission form, please send a pdf version of your certificate to the Research Management Section ([email protected]).

(2) APRIN e-Learning Program’s “Responsible Conduct of Research”e-learning course
  • There is an English version.
  • Completion time: two to three hours
  • If you wish to take this course, please contact the Research Management Section and provide them with the following registration information: your name, affiliation, faculty/staff ID number, and e-mail address (send to [email protected]).

APRIN e-Learning Program

* You can check your own completion record and certificate validity period of “Research Ethics Education Courses for Researchers” in MyWaseda.
→Login to MyWaseda>”Research” tab>”Completion Record of Research Ethics Education Courses for Researchers”

* If you are an Adjunct Researcher, you will be asked to submit your certificate of research ethics education course completion to follow the necessary procedure when you are first appointed or reappointed for the job. The certificate needs to be submitted to the office of your place of affiliation.

* Some changes have been made to the APRIN e-Learning Program (eAPRIN) requirement standards for Adjunct Researchers. For details, see here. (Added on July 31, 2024)

Regarding the completion of the research ethics education courses by researchers who are not teaching or researching full-time at Waseda University

Targets
– Visiting Research Fellow
– Visiting Faculty (limited to individuals who have a positive balance of public research funds as of July 1)
– Professor Emeritus /Emerita (limited to individuals who have a positive balance of public research funds as of July 1)
– Adjunct Researcher  * The same as in the addition dated July 31, 2024 at the end of the “instructions on how to take a course and report to Waseda University” in the previous section.

How to access the contents and report course completion
– Visiting Research Fellow, Visiting Faculty, and Professor Emeritus /Emerita
Complete one of the research ethics education contents (1) and (2) described in the “instructions on how to take a course and report to Waseda University” in the previous section, and report course completion. (For how to access the contents and report course completion, see the “instructions on how to take a course and report to Waseda University” in the previous section.)

– Adjunct Researcher
Complete one of the research ethics education contents (1) and (2) described in the “instructions on how to take a course and report to Waseda University” in the previous section, and report course completion.

* The method of completing the course is different from the one described in the previous section. The certificate needs to be submitted to the office of your place of affiliation.

Notes
If you are not teaching or researching full-time at Waseda University, the research ethics education content (2) is not limited to the course specified by Waseda University; an APRIN e-Learning Program (eAPRIN) course recognized by a school where you are teaching full-time, your previous school or another institution is also acceptable, regardless of the contents.
* The “Responsible Conduct of Research” course shall be selected from the APRIN e-Learning Program (eAPRIN). (See Appendix 1.)

* The validity period of the certificate of course completion is, in line with Waseda University’s standards, set to a five-year period, including the year in which the course is taken.

* This system will start with regard to certificates of course completion submitted after July 31, 2024 (the system will also apply to certificates of course completion for courses completed before July 31, 2024).
* Courses specified by Waseda University:
– JST Course (1) Biomedical
– JST Course (2) Engineering
– JST Course (3) Humanities

* This section “regarding the completion of the research ethics education courses by researchers who are not teaching or researching full-time at Waseda University” was added on December 3, 2024.
