Develop logical thinking skills through mathematics

Program Overview

Learn math and logical thinking skills through the adoption of familiar subjects.

As mathematics is used in various real-world settings, the Introduction to University Mathematics series specifically uses interest rates and optimization problems as a basis to teach students mathematics.
The series teaches students how these mathematical concepts work, without assuming high school math knowledge.
The math and logical thinking skills acquired through this program are essential in any subjects.
Especially, this series carefully explains the meaning of equations and transformations and thought processes in a clear manner for all students.
The Introduction to University Mathematics series now also offers beginner-level α and intermediate-level β for interest and optimization, respectively, as well as advanced-level γ, which deals with calculus and linear algebra.
An LA (Learning Assistant) is also available to help students in answering any questions so that they can take the course with ease.
Furthermore, the university offers subjects related to the “mathematical structure” used in fields such as economics, linguistics, and the like.

Key Learning Areas

Kind explanations

Our course does not assume any prior knowledge of high school-level math. We carefully explain the way of deforming equations and thought processes, in order to understand math concepts.

Math is useful!

In this program, we use real-life scenarios that give the practical application of math. People who previously believed math had no practical value will be amazed to discover how math is utilized in various aspects of everyday life.

You will develop logical thinking skills

In these courses, we study not only calculation, solution but also mathematical theory. During this part of the course, students will be required to think logically, building up from the definitions they learned earlier. Through such training, students will get the skill to think logically.

Test preparation and advanced problems

(in Japanese course) We provide optional pre-test and advanced problems for each session. Pre-test problems are designed to help students obtain higher scores on quizzes each session as part of their test preparation. The advanced problems are application problems for students who do not find the class content sufficiently challenging. In English course, the instructor helps you by e-mail or on his office hour.

Marking answers and answering questions

(In Japanese course) If students submit answers for pre-test and/or advanced problems, the LA will mark and return these submitted answers. The LA will also teach students in detail about the points they should be aware of, such as formula transformations and the use of letters. During the class, the LA can also address any questions students might have related to concepts they still have trouble understanding.
(In English course) The instructor helps the study of all students on his office hour or by e-mail.

Various subjects

You can study in many various courses, the structure of (numbers of) group, cryptography and prime numbers or knot theory and geometry. None of them require any prior knowledge in high-school level math.

Why do we study mathematics?

Math division instructors

Mathematics is an important tool. It occupies a large part of SAT, GMAT or many entrance examinations. Many students ask for “How do we solve these problems?” or “Tell me the method of solution” instantly. However, they say, mathematical problem can be solved by computer. Computer gives correct answers in a moment. It cannot make mistake. Then, why do we have to study mathematics?
Here we say that we shall order “Solve this problem!” to the computer. How do we do it? Yes, for it, we need to express our problem in mathematical manner. Moreover, in order to do so, we need to know the mathematical world.
In GEC, we give attractive math courses for all students, even who have not studied math in high school.
