Students can participate in two different practices 1) Academic Writing Course in Japanese, which is an on-demand course for first-year students, and 2) the Writing Center, which provides academic writing support for all Waseda students. Both are conducted individually by professional and rigorously trained writing instructors.
Each student receives feedback on their writing in the course on Academic Writing in Japanese. This feedback includes comments and evaluation scores. The Writing Center offers advice tailored to each individual student’s unique circumstances and writing needs. Both offer guidance to the writer to assist them in improving their writing. The practices aim to empower the writer to improve their writing skills in terms of argumentation, structure, and citation. Such guidance will enable students to steadily develop their academic writing abilities, which they can utilize in various situations even after entering the professional world.
In this course, students will learn one academic writing skill per week over the duration of seven weeks. Through participation in this course, students will gain the ability to develop a solid foundation for academic reports and papers, which will enable them to work confidently on various forms of academic papers and theses associated with their majors.
This course is available online, on demand. Students can watch classes at their convenience, from their home or campus computer. Each class is approximately 1 hour long, and new content is delivered weekly. Past classes can be viewed online at any point during the semester when a student is registered for this course.
For students to improve their writing skills, they need to first gain practical experience in writing. Therefore, in this course, students must complete a written assignment of around 500-words following each class. Each week’s assignment will be returned to the student with comments and evaluation points provided by writing instructors who have received specialized training.
At the Writing Center, our goal is not only to enhance students’ writing but also to foster their growth as writers. To achieve this, we provide guidance through dialogue and exercises, enabling students to independently recognize issues in their writing and make the necessary improvements.
The Writing Center supports writing in both Japanese and English. Our tutors are trained to review a wide range of academic texts, including reports, graduation theses, and study abroad applications. Students can seek guidance at any stage of the writing process, from planning to the final draft.
Each session is 45 minutes, with a writing tutor providing one-on-one guidance. We offer both face-to-face tutoring at Waseda University campus and online tutoring through video calls and screen sharing. You can utilize the tutoring services free of charge as many times as you need while you are enrolled at the university.
I believe that everyone is looking forward to the study opportunities that await them in university. However, some of you may also have concerns about having to write numerous reports and how to approach them.
