Research introduction
At Kakitsuka Laboratory, we explore semiconductor lasers and their applications for next-generation information and communication systems. Our goal is to support the rapidly growing demand for data processing by using photonic technologies, ranging from optical fiber networks to on-board and device-to-device optical interconnects. Our research spans the full optical link, from light generation to light detection. Currently, our lab focuses on complex-coupled grating lasers, optimization of narrow-linewidth lasers, and topological lasers. We also study key light-control devices such as optical modulators, as well as advanced photodetectors including vacuum traveling-carrier photodiodes (VTC-PDs) and uni-traveling-carrier photodiodes (UTC-PDs).

Seminar
Research activities
We hold a weekly group meeting where each member shares research progress and recent developments in the field. Everyone is encouraged to ask questions and exchange ideas. Although our topics are diverse, discussions often lead to new perspectives and deeper understanding. In addition, we organize research seminars once or twice a week. Depending on the situation, members may have personal discussions with the professor or join journal clubs with other students. Professor Kakitsuka is always supportive and provides detailed explanations whenever needed. During our research, we can build simulation models and see how design changes lead to noticeable performance improvements, while also visualizing how light behaves inside the structures. We are also excited by the many promising future applications in photonics, which we believe will play an important role in next-generation communication and computing technologies.

Lab atmosphere
Our lab has a friendly and open atmosphere, where members can pursue topics they are truly interested in. Questions and discussion are always welcome, and even if you are new to photonics, both Professor Kakitsuka and the lab members are happy to help.
