~Research topics~
The main research field of Kakitsuka laboratory is novel light emitting devices and systems composed of semiconductor lasers and various optical components, aiming for further advancement of information and communication systems. Taking advantages of the optical circuit design techniques, we are studying various devices and systems.
The following are some example research topics that we are focusing on:
- Semiconductor lasers for optical fiber communication systems and photonic integrated circuits
- Lightwave control devices like optical modulators and optical isolators
- High-frequency photodetectors for terahertz wave emission and optical communication systems
- Photonics-based novel data processing systems
~Laboratory activities~
Kakitsuka Lab is working in cooperation with companies and universities for researching on future optical devices such as on-silicon lasers and photodetectors. Laboratory meetings and seminars are held once a week each. In the seminars, we introduce latest technologies each other, learn skills for research, and discuss research progress. During the seminars, we can improve our research by discussing our ideas and questions. Professor Kakitsuka holds regular interviews to ensure that we can consult our studies and daily life.
In the first year of the master’s course, we are studying photonic device design after learning the fundamental courses in the first semester. In the process of learning, extensive reading of books and articles related to the research direction is necessary. In addition to self-learning, studying with other members and asking for their comprehension will help us understand better. When facing difficult problems, actively showing our opinions and listening to their ideas, collaboration can be the key to question solving.
Kakitsuka Laboratory was established in 2019. Now it has 13 master’s course students. Professor Kakitsuka cares about the students both in study and in life. No matter what difficulties we have, he gives us advice and help us overcome the problems patiently. Seniors will also kindly help you solve the questions in your research. You can also study freely in the relaxed atmosphere of the student room.
