Research direction of Kimura Laboratory
Kimura’s laboratory has a wide range of research fields, and students can choose their own topics and concentrate on research. Under the guidance of Professor Shinji Kimura, from the three angles of application, design methodology and basic theory, the research on hardware design optimization technologies and their verification is carried out. In addition, under the guidance of Assistant Professor Shinichi Nishizawa, the design of electronic design automation is carried out, mainly VLSI physical design and cell design.
My research
Before the middle of this year, I was still doing research on converters in the field of power electronics. Right now, I’m learning to develop hardware accelerators for Convolutional Neural Networks. I have made rapid progress in this field with the guidance of the professor and the help of my doctoral students. In Kimura’s laboratory, the professor encourages everyone to start from their own interests and choose the most innovative topics for research. After reading the thesis, the students share their learning results in the seminar, and the professor will guide the students in a timely and serious manner.
Doing research
Research topics and conditions
At the application level, we do research on Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and random forest algorithms. At the design method level, research topics are arithmetic operations and approximate computations. At the basic theoretical level, we study combinatorial logic optimization algorithms and Boolean function operations including quantum annealing.
Seminars are held twice a week to promote each other’s research by sharing research progress and readings. The laboratory provides abundant computing resources and software licenses, and can conduct most researches related to digital circuits.
