Challenges in developing future medical technology

NAKAGAWA, Wakutaka 1st year of master’s program

Our research goal is to develop several unique technologies to realize the organic integration of soft, wet biomaterials, such as the human body, and hard dry devices, or electronics. Our research topics are as follows:
◇Soft Interface: Interfaces between devices and biomaterials
◇Wet Interface: Sites for chemical energy conversion
◇Ion-controlling Interface: Sites for interactive communication with biomaterials

~My Research~
I was conducting research in the field of power electronics at the previous school before enrolling IPS. On the other hand, I am currently working on the development of a biofuel cell that uses carbon fiber to generate electricity from components within plants. In this way, by challenging myself in many fields, I can integrate my knowledge between each field, which may lead to further technological applications. Even if there is a lack of knowledge, students can challenge new fields without difficulty because we can learn from basic knowledge under lectures and guidance. In addition, I started this research project after matching my own interests with what Professor Miyake wanted to do during our discussion. In this way, Professor Miyake respects the ideas and desires of students and provides appropriate support to help us achieve our goals.

~Various Research and Daily Activities~
Miyake Lab is working hard in cooperation with many companies and universities to develop and use practically the future of medical devices, such as nanotube stamps used to directly deliver drugs to cells, the development of special membranes to control protons in solution, and smart contact lenses to measure biochemical information in tear fluid.
Seminars and meetings are scheduled once each week to accelerate the research process by actively sharing the progress of the research and the papers that the students have selected that highlight the latest trends in technology.

~Attraction of Miyake Lab~
Miyake Lab was selected for 「Waseda University PoC Fund Program」, which aims to create Waseda University venture companies in FY2021. Later, based on the our research results, we started “Heinz Tech Co.”  The commercialization of the project has increased the number of people involved to a much greater extent, so the research has been accelerated and advanced through new knowledge and advices. It is also an important and valuable experience for students to be in an environment where their research is actually implemented in society.

Let’s make future medical technology innovations a reality together in Miyake Lab!
