Introduction of the Ikenaga Laboratory

Yanchao Liu and Yuan Li, 1st year doctoral student

Welcome to the Ikenaga Laboratory. Researchers in Ikenaga Laboratory are all aiming for solving various kinds of image and video information systems’ problems to access any information at “anytime” and “anywhere” with “safe” and “comfortable”.

One of our lab’s research groups focuses on automatic sports video analysis and pose estimation. Main purpose of this group is to automatically extract high-accurate and real-time data such as 3D player position and 3D posture from videos. Through various technique, we will build a visually automatic data acquisition system which can be helpful for TV content broadcasting and national team training.

Another research group focuses on high frame rate and ultra-low delay computer vision system. We design highly parallel algorithms and implement them on FPGA to obtain a high processing speed of 1000 fps with the delay less than 1 ms. Applications like defect detection, corner and line detection of components will greatly improve production efficiency, let industry automatic and promote the development of Industry 4.0. Furthermore, video compression group mainly focus on H.266/VVC. By coding and speeding up this standard, we are building next generation TV conference systems. The HDR group combine with semi-supervised learning or other convolution network, higher quality and more vividly video will be obtained.

Currently, there are 24 students in our laboratory. Even in the tough situation of coronavirus, we will have regular lab meeting and joint seminar. Students can not only fully discuss with Prof. Ikenaga and other lab members, but also brush up communication, presentation and writing skills. What’s more, students in our lab can have regular meetings with professors from top universities like Tsinghua University, Nanjing University and so on. We also have chances to discuss with top companies’ senior engineers, let us not only focus on research itself but also broaden the horizons of industry.

The daily activities of our lab are very colorful. We will hold welcome party, year-end party and lab tour. We have already visited a lot of beautiful places such as Yamaguchi, Nagasaki in summer’s lab tour. Through these activities, we can get closer to Japanese food, Japanese culture and the most important is that we will be closer to each other.

Prof. Ikenaga provides insightful guidance, creates best research environment, and makes optimal atmosphere for all the lab members. Let’s do exciting research, enjoy colorful life, and embrace wonderful future together at Ikenaga laboratory.
