Since the 21st century, with the development of globalization, the importance of international communication has become more and more prominent. However, the diversity of natural languages has also become a cumbersome problem at the same time. The natural language processing is born to solve these problems, it is a method of reducing language obstacles in human communication. Furthermore, it plays a very important role not only among humans but also in man-machine communication.
There are many different research topics in the Lepage Laboratory, and we can exchange opinions freely with members of the laboratory. Our research includes a wide range of topics such as example based machine translation, statistical machine translation, sampling based alignment, data analysis, analogy relation, neural network etc. There are plenty of research facilities in the laboratory, so you can do complex experiments easily in each field through powerful CPUs and GPUs. Seminars are also held weekly. Usually we do presentations or tutorials about our research progress and discuss with each other. Since the members of the laboratory are from several different countries, we can give various useful opinions, especially on natural languages to each other. In addition, thanks to individual guidance from professor Lepage on our research topics, we may have opportunities to publish papers and attend in various international conferences every year.
Here I have to say that professor Lepage is one best supervisors I have ever had on my school life. He is a strict, enthusiastic and honest man and he is always full of vigor. In his lectures, even the most difficult problem, he still can use examples to give you the most understandable explanation. He always teach students patiently and pursuing perfection for any detail. You may not believe it, but he starts working with the students everyday from 8 o’clock a.m. Professor encourages teamwork and cooperation, requires us to treat academic and research in cautious attitude.
Professor Lepage has abundant knowledge not only in computer science but also linguistics, so you can communicate smoothly with him both in English and Japanese. Actually, I do not know how many languages professor can speak! Not only on research, professor Lepage will also provide plenty chances for internships and job hunting activities to students as possible as he can. Thus, our laboratory is just like an international family, you do not need to worry about communication problems here.
We have lots of lab activities like welcome party, new year party, celebration and beach BBQ regularly that is organized by ourselves. We believe you can get a wonderful memories with professor and students from different countries in our lab.
