Abstract:
The aim of this short article is to suggest that exploring linguistic variation – especially on the phonetic-phonological level thanks to the development of corpus phonology (illustrated through the (Inter)Phonology of Contemporary French program in the case of French in the French-speaking world) – leads us to reconsider the functional value of pronunciation norms, for example when it comes to transcribing the spontaneous speech of learners of French. Hence a renewed light shed on the importance of pronunciation education training in foreign language education, notably in French as a foreign language.
