Professor Greg Dvorak co-curated “Air Canoe: Art from Northern Oceania” in the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial, Brisbane, Australia

As part of the 10th Asia Pacific Triennial of Contemporary art held between December 2021 and April 2022, Professor Greg Dvorak co-curated an exhibit of several contemporary artists and collectives from the islands and diaspora of the Republic of the Marshall Islands and Federated States of Micronesia. This was the culmination of four years of research and in-depth conversations/workshops together with local communities and creative workers in these islands. Devoted to the theme of resilience amidst climate change, demilitarization, decolonization, nuclear testing, tourism, COVID-19 and many other challenges, this exhibit was titled “Air Canoe” –critically referencing both the military-touristic technology of jet flight while recuperating the indigenous knowledge systems of sophisticated navigation and “worlding” through the sky. Air Canoe was highly acclaimed by critics and indigenous groups throughout the Asia Pacific region, despite the limited audience who could visit the Queensland Museum of Art venue due to COVID19 restrictions. Further description of the exhibit can be found click here  as well as a virtual 360 degree tour of the entire triennial is located  click here(the Air Canoe exhibit was on the third floor of the Gallery of Modern Art, GOMA) and can be found by navigating to the upper right corner of the third floor in the floor plan).
