About the Institute

From the Director

The Director: KANNO Hiroshi Professor

The Institute for Business and Finance offers various education activities and programs designed for cultivating management professionals who can lead the next generation, together with Waseda Business School, a leading business school in Japan and Asia. The institute also carries out research activities and research projects to accumulate practical knowledge, which will be the foundation for such education activities.

Today’s business schools have two sections : “MBA education section” for young business people who want to become a part of the business elite in the future and “executive education section” for the provision of essential knowledge to solve problems faced by business people who play a central role at the business management level. As an institution with a central part in the latter, namely, executive education, we at the Institute for Business and Finance would like to carry out many activities in order to provide a platform for diverse and advanced intellectual creation and enlightenment.

More specifically, we offer a number of educational programs, including “Top Management” designed for cultivating corporate executives, “MBA Essentials” for managers and business persons who seek the latest MBA knowledge, “Fund Management,” “Investment Banking,” and “IT Management Innovation/Corporate Revival Practice .”  We also offer “EMBA Essence,” which is a one-year program for department and section chiefs who are currently active in the front lines of corporate management so that they can obtain skills to make business decisions with a more advanced and broader vision in their busy schedule.

As for research activities and research projects, we will facilitate world-class research in the fields of business and finance by promoting collaboration and conducting joint research among researchers from all areas related to business and finance at Waseda University, researchers of universities and research institutions in Japan and overseas, and business people actually engaging in the tasks of business and finance. Research findings will be first delivered as working papers or in the bulletin and will eventually be posted in scholarly journals or business magazines as academic papers or research articles , or published as a book. We hope to contribute widely to the society through publication of these research findings, which will have a tremendous academic impact and influence on decision-making in actual business settings and during public policy-making processes.

The world is reaching a crucial tipping point. The great technological innovation and wave of population explosion seen in the twentieth century are reaching a turning point, and it appears as though the waves of deflation or stagnation are spreading beyond the advanced countries to the developing countries. I believe that, under these circumstances, today’s corporate management is expected to demonstrate the boldness to explore new possibilities without being bound by the traditional mindset, prudence to prepare for great risks in the globalizing world, and flexibility to deal with diversified sets of values.

I hope that these activities of ours, combined with a number of research activities and publication activities carried out in collaboration with Waseda Business School, will contribute to further development of corporate activities in Japan and worldwide.
