*~Special Lecture by the Rector of Universität Bonn Michael Hoch~*
~Encounters and Exchange: Why science (and societies) need curiosity and openness~
At the beginning of all excellent science there is curiosity. The deep, often insatiable desire to understand the unknown and discover the new. Deeply anchored in people, it is the actual driver of progress and innovation—the basis for our prosperity.
The history of science shows that openness is a key element of success as well: encounters and exchanges. Above all, the willingness to listen, reflect and accept new perspectives. The unique partnership between the Universities of Waseda and Bonn, which has existed across continents for decades, is an outstanding example of this.
The “special lecture” is dedicated to the importance of these basic attitudes for science and how universities can support and promote them. It also explores the question of how important curiosity and openness are for societies in an increasingly fast-moving world that is changing fundamentally at a geopolitical level. Especially in times of uncertainty, in which “old” beliefs are being questioned.
