On May 28, 2024, President Aiji Tanaka visited Yale University. During the visit, President Tanaka met with President Peter Salovey to discuss the historical relationship between Yale and Waseda, dating back to the connection established by Asakawa Kan’ichi, who earned his Ph.D. from Yale in 1902. President Tanaka emphasized Yale’s role as a key aspirational peer institution in his efforts to transform Waseda University. President Tanaka also met members of the Yale leadership team, including Tamar Gendler, Dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences; Steven Wilkinson, Vice Provost for Global Strategy; and Jieun Pyun, Director for Asia. They exchanged views on how elite institutions such as Yale achieve and maintain institutional excellence. The visit was prompted by President Salovey’s visit to Waseda in January 2024. It was of great significance for Waseda, reaffirming its longstanding partnership with Yale and creating new connections.
