Waseda University mourns the passing of Uzbekistan President Islam Abduganievich Karimov.
As the first president of Uzbekistan from its independence from the Soviet Union in 1991, Mr. Karimov, with his total dedication and immense leadership, steadily advanced political reform towards the establishment of a new republic. A number of countries in Central Asia sought transition to a market economy that time. Under his exceptional political initiative and astuteness, Uzbekistan has achieved status as a member in the international community amid the difficult times in the region.
In recognition of his remarkable accomplishments, Waseda awarded Mr. Karimov its honorary doctorate in 2002.
