On June 11, 2024, President Aiji Tanaka visited The Ohio State University (OSU), where he received his Ph.D. in Political Science in 1985. The Ohio State University and Waseda have been partner institutions since 2002.
During his visit, he met with the new OSU president, Walter E. “Ted” Carter, as well as Dr. Hiroyuki Fujita, Former Chair of the OSU Board of Trustees, and other OSU officials. In recent decades, OSU has solidified itself as one of the top institutions in the United States. President Tanaka mentioned during the visit that OSU’s reputation has led to Waseda viewing them as a key aspirational peer university, thus creating a benchmark for the efforts Waseda is making to transform itself under the leadership of President Tanka. He further expressed that he wishes to strengthen Waseda’s partnership with OSU.
Accompanied by Waseda University Professor Gil Latz, President Tanaka was welcomed by OSU leaders, officials, and faculty members including Interim Executive Vice President and Provost Karla Zadnik, Vice Provost for Global Strategy and International Affairs Kaya Şahin, Senior Vice Provost for Faculty Patrick Louchouarn, Vice Provost for Academic Policy and Faculty Resources Helen Malone, and Executive Dean of the College of Arts David Horn. They generously shared insights into OSU’s excellence in areas such as faculty recruitment, faculty development, and advancement. President Tanaka’s visit marked a significant step for Waseda in strengthening its partnership with OSU under the new leadership of President Carter.
