Waseda University’s School of Culture, Media and Society (CMS) is now accepting applications for its newest English-based undergraduate degree program, the Global Studies in Japanese Cultures Program (JCulP), to start next year.

JCulP will admit fifteen international students to the program for September 2017. International students are not required to have Japanese proficiency upon admission, but Japanese language study is part of the program’s coursework. JCulP students will conduct research on Japanese culture and engage in interdisciplinary studies to become specialists in Japanese culture with a global mindset and a breadth of knowledge.

Why WASEDA? Why Tokyo?

Studying abroad may seem daunting, but studying Japanese language and culture at Waseda, a global university with over 5,000 international students, means to live and learn in the heart of Tokyo. This city is where cutting-edge culture and traditions from Japan’s ancient past coexist, and the incredibly diverse cityscapes of the metropolis exhibit many aspects of Japan’s past and present. Many museums, galleries, and art venues in the city also offer ample opportunities to experience Japanese culture. The spirit of hospitality, courteous service, and skills of master artisans can be experienced readily by visitors from overseas.

In addition, Tokyo, one of the safest cities in the world, is the center of business and technology. Toyota, Sony, Honda, Canon, Bridgestone, Komatsu, Subaru, Hitachi, Toshiba, and other major Japanese manufacturers have their headquarters here. Tokyo is also a trendsetting city. Many major cosmetics and beauty-product companies, such as SHISEIDO, also have their headquarters in Tokyo. Not to mention, the Olympics will be held here in 2020. All these exciting opportunities wait for you as a JCulP student. For more reasons to study in Tokyo, read about the Charms of Tokyo and watch the video below.

After graduation

Many students in CMS aspire to careers in mass media after graduation, and approximately 10% of the School’s graduates find employment in this field. However, the cross-disciplinary education at CMS paves the way to a wide range of careers, including the information and communications industry, international agencies, governments, NGOs, public and non-profit sectors, trading companies, the financial sector, the tourism industry and more. Students in the program are well prepared with strong communication and negotiation skills as well as skills for building a global network, all valuable qualities that employers look for.

For those interested in becoming researchers and educators, graduates of the program may also pursue further studies in Japanese literature and culture either at Waseda University or other institutions, such as Columbia University and UCLA, which have strong ties with Waseda’s Ryusaku Tsunoda Center of Japanese Culture.

This program is accepting applicants from Oct 11 to 28, 2016, in the first application period and from Feb 2 to 22, 2017, in the second round.
