The students who study and work on campus play an important role at the university. Here, we introduce the profiles of students to highlight what kind of students are involved in the Student Participation and Job program, and what their schedules are like. In this article, we will introduce Miki Kawana, who works as a student staff member at the PR Desk of the Student Affairs Section (Waseda Weekly). We will talk to her about her experience in media as an intern outside of the university, and about her knowledge in social media management and accompanying reporters.

Q. When did you first get involved in the Student Job program?
I started in October 2019.
Q. What got you started?
I first learned about the Student Job program when I went to the Gender and Sexuality Center for a seminar. That’s when I heard that there was an opening at the PR Desk of the Student Affairs Section. I wanted to apply right away! I thought I could contribute to my university through my experience as a media intern, so I applied.
Q. What kind of work do you do?
I mostly handle social media management, some administrative work, editing, and reporting for Waseda Weekly, the official university web magazine.
Q. Tell us how you’ve felt since you’ve joined the Student Job program.
When I accompanied reporters to cover stories, I was surprised to learn about the powerful connection among graduates. Through that reporting, I learned about people’s love for Waseda, not just from students, but also graduates, university staff, and members of the community. I rediscovered what’s great about Waseda University, and how it’s loved by all kinds of people.
Q. How do you manage to balance multiple tasks, like your studies, the Student Job program, and club activities?
I’m not in a club, but I work as a video media intern. I make sure to set clear schedules for my studies, internship, and the Student Job program. I found that finding a good balance helps make things more efficient.
Q.Do you have any suggestions for improving the Student Job program that you’d like to share with the university?
If we can work remotely, I think it will broaden our possibilities.
Q. Tell us about your future aspirations, and what challenges you’d like to take on.
I want to get more people excited about Waseda Weekly through social media, and bring in more fans.
