Students who work at the university: “Planning events related to health” Interview with Takehiro Yukinari, 3rd-year student, School of Social Sciences

Staff profile of the Student Participation and Job program

Takehiro Yukinari, 3rd-year student, School of Social Sciences

The students who study and work on campus play an important role at the university. Here, we introduce the profiles of students to highlight what kind of students are involved in the Student Participation and Job program, and what their schedules are like. In this article, we will introduce Takehiro Yukinari, a student in the School of Social Sciences and a member of the Student Sokenkai Committee. We will talk about his daily activities in planning and organizing various events to help students stay healthy every day.

Q. When did you first get involved in the Student Participation and Job program?

I joined in the spring of my freshman year (May 2018).

Q. What got you started?

Right after entering the university, I was thinking broadly about what club I wanted to join, when, by chance, I learned about the Student Sokenkai Committee (Waseda University Student Health Promotion Mutual Aid Association). I was a member of a health committee in the past, so I was interested. When I participated in the introductory event, I found the content of the activities to be interesting. On top of that, I liked the older students who were there, and the general vibe felt right for me. I thought it would be fun, so I joined.

Every year, committee members go on a summer camp for a chance to interact with each other and visit off-campus facilities. (The summer camp was canceled this year. Yukinari is on the left edge of the picture.)

Q. What kind of activities are you involved in?

We do PR work for the Medical Fee Reimbursement System, and plan and organize various events like the 100-yen breakfast, dental checkups, and health festivals to help students live healthier everyday lives. We’re currently preparing for a dental checkup event, as well as our first online health festival in the fall semester.

To encourage people to participate in the event, raffles for prizes and other activities are planned.

Q. Tell us how you’ve felt since you’ve joined the Student Participation and Job program.

We sometimes have the opportunity to meet with people and visit their companies and organizations in order to obtain sponsorships for our events. Whenever we do this, we feel a strong responsibility to represent Waseda University in a positive light in our activities.

We also have exchanges with organizations of other universities that are engaged in similar activities as the Student Sokenkai Committee, and we sometimes hold seminars at several schools to share ideas. Each university seems to be holding similar events, like the dental checkups, but we found that Waseda University has the largest number of participants, and holds the most events, although it’s true that there are differences in the number of students enrolled in each university. We invite nutritionists to the health festivals, which is one of our annual events, and they told us that more people visited our booths than those of any other university, and we were surprised at the high level of health awareness among Waseda students.

Q. How do you manage to balance multiple things, like your studies, the Student Participation and Job program, and club activities?

Yukinari passes out flyers as part of the PR activities before and after events.

I try to divide up the work as much as possible so that it doesn’t all fall in one person’s lap. Also, whenever someone is busy, someone else has to cover for them. I find that mutual trust is really important during those times, and communication is something I value more now. Thanks to these efforts, I manage to remain a member of four clubs and organizations, including the Student Sokenkai Committee, and I’m able to put in as much work in each of them as anyone else.

Q. Do you have any suggestions for improving the Student Participation and Job program that you’d like to share with the university?

The way it is now, I don’t really see much meaning in having the Student Participation and Job program organized as a single group. Various students and organizations that serve different roles and perform different tasks are part of the program, so we face many challenges. However, if we create an environment that’s more conducive to mutual exchange and support, I think the entirety of the Student Participation and Job program will improve, and will increase visibility among students.

Q. Tell us about your future aspirations, and what challenges you’d like to take on.

We’re trying to find ways to deliver information that will encourage students to think more about their health, and to help them in their daily lives in any way possible, as a way to respond to the coronavirus crisis.
