When you think of Tokyo’s sightseeing spots, for most people the first thing that comes to mind is Asakusa.
Asakusa has been a flourishing downtown area of Tokyo since the Edo Period. It has the bustling road “Nakamise Street” that connects Kaminari-mon with Asakusa Temple; “Hanayashiki Street” where Japan’s first ever theme park is located; “Denbouin Street” where Japanese traditional artisan’s shops are gathered, and “Sushiya Street” where lots of Sushi restaurants battle for hungry customers.
There are actually over 30 shopping streets in the Asakusa area, and you can still feel the emotion of old downtown Tokyo amongst the busy sightseeing areas. Asakusa Station was the first subway station in East Asia when it opened in 1927 and the former Asakusa International Theater was home to the Shochiku Musical Theater Group. It really was a crowded district filled with entertainment.
Now on the “Rediscover Asakusa” field trip, you will be asked to venture through that old historical area in groups, finding out specific spots such as “The golden monster appears in the middle of the shopping street” or “Mysterious figures hiding on the roof” and take a picture with them. Amongst the many famous sightseeing areas, you just might find some unexpected and unexplored charm. And of course we have a super prize for the winning team!
Enjoy mixing with international and Japanese students as you explore Asakusa together. Come along and join us on this journey of rediscovery!
