This institute brings together diverse researchers at Waseda University to study Latin America. By leveraging the expertise of nearly all researchers in this field, we aim to illuminate and address critical issues such as immigration, poverty, fragile democracies, colonial power dynamics, racial and ethnic conflict, gender discrimination, and human rights violations under military and neoliberal regimes through scholarly exchange and collaborative projects.

Research Summary

WILAS has provided a platform for researchers in Latin American studies to engage in academic exchanges and explore innovative, interdisciplinary and comparative approaches that transcend the often narrow methodologies and frameworks of specialized fields.The main research topics that WILAS has been exploring through international exchange and presentations include: immigration, poverty, fragile democracies, colonial power dynamics, racial and ethnic conflict, gender discrimination, and human rights violations and reconciliations in Latin America.These topics should obviously be understood not as issues that have suddently emerged in the 21^st century, but rather as ongoing problems that have been examined, though not resolved, for centuries. The primary roles of WILAS are 1) to raise awareness within the Waseda community and Japanese society about these issues by presenting insights gained from comparative and interdisciplinary studies, 2) to explore multiple angles and perspectives to deepen understanding, and 3) to ongoingly navigate the complexities that arise in these explorations.
