From the viewpoint of urban planning and based on research on advanced transport systems such as the LRT, this institute conducts research and proposes urban policies to realize a smart city of the future where transportation and land use are coordinated. In addition, we are researching how cities and transportation should work toward a decarbonized society.
In recent years, there is a shift in demand for people- and environmentally-friendly transportation systems. Therefore, cities around the world are considering the introduction of various advanced transport systems. Here, although transportation system development has moved forward, the lack in development of urban and social systems that underpin these systems hindered the overall advancement. This phenomenon arose due to numerous issues inherent in each community, such as issues faced by existing operators and governments, and consensus building among residents. In particular, major issues including co-existence with existing vehicles, and consensus building for the development of designated lanes must be resolved when introducing new transportation that operates on existing roads.
This research institute examines the hierarchy of transportation networks in today’s cities from the standpoint of urban planning. Furthermore, researches the potential of the implementation of advanced transport systems, and the utilization of such systems in the context of urban planning. In addition, this research institute proposes solutions to a Smarter society using integrated transportation and land use through the integration of advanced transport systems with smart houses, smart buildings, and smart grids. This research institute aims to promote Light Rail Transit (LRT) and autonomous driving through proposing detailed solutions for the introduction of these transportation solutions in existing cities.
